Frequently Asked Questions:
What is an independent living home?
Independent housing, often referred to as shared housing, co-living, or community housing, provides a shared home with common areas and either shared or private bedrooms. Utilities are typically included, allowing residents to live independently without supervision. This option is ideal for individuals seeking stable, affordable housing in a respectful, self-directed environment.
Is emergency housing or help to find housing available?
Umoja Refuge provides shared housing for individuals who are ready for a stable living environment. While we are unable to assist with emergency housing needs or act as an intermediary in securing housing elsewhere, we want to ensure you get the right help. If you are currently experiencing a housing emergency, please contact your local housing crisis hotline or dial 211 for immediate assistance.
Is there staff on-site?
Umoja Refuge is not staffed like assisted living or group homes. Our model is independent shared housing, meaning residents live autonomously. We do provide regular property oversight, maintenance support, and weekly check-ins to help ensure safety and comfort.
How much does an independent living community cost?
Monthly costs vary by property, room type, and location. Our goal is to keep housing competitively priced and affordable for working adults and individuals on fixed incomes. Contact us for current availability and specific pricing details.
Do you provide meals or transportation?
We do not provide daily meals or transportation services. Residents are welcome to coordinate meal deliveries, grocery services, or outside transportation as needed. Our locations are selected with convenient access to public transit and rideshare options whenever possible.
If my care needs change, will I still receive the support I need in the independent living home?
Independent living does not include hands-on personal care or medical supervision. Residents with higher care needs may live with us as long as they are supported by an appropriate third-party caregiver or service provider. If your needs increase over time, you may continue your stay provided outside support remains in place to ensure your safety and well-being.
